This is photo showing a version of the old Irish tradition of dancing at the crossroads. On fine summer Sunday evenings young local people would gather for open air dancing and local musicals played music. They were often at well known crossroads where timber dancing platforms were located. This was a popular in rural areas from the 1900s when most people didn't have cars so getting to dance halls in towns was difficult. This family photo shows a unique version of this - dancing on the wooden bridge in Glenbower Woods in the De Cappell estate at Killeagh East Cork on May 1938. This specific event started in the early 1830's after the completion of major works on the estate when Sir Arthur De Capell Brooke invited local people to view and celebrate the work done. A tradition grew up that a similar event would take place 'May Sunday' every year. Various bands and musicians arrived as would hundreds of people by horse drawn transport with the arrival of '“showmen adding to the gaiety'. As well as traditional Irish jigs, reels and polkas, participants tried their hand, or more appropriately their feet, at waltzes, quicksteps and foxtrots. The tradition of dancing at the crossroads died out in the '50s as mobility improved and emigration reduced rural populations. The event at Gelnbower Woods, with dancing and much more, has been revived in recent years. Winter colours in Glenbower Wood..This particular beech tree sits on the edge of where the old lake once was in Glenbower Wood. The lake dam was deliberately breeched in 1988.
