Wild Garlic - 10 May 2015 Glenbower Wood (50)

The Glenbower website is being re-built at the moment, so apologies. While we build it, find updates and relevant links here: linktr.ee/glenbower

Interesting facts about Glenbower Wood:

  • It was owned by the DeCapell family from 1182 until 1933, that’s seven hundred and fifty one years!!!! They were an Anglo-Norman family who lived at Aghadoe House.
  • A portion of the Glenbower woodland has been community-owned since 1995, when the Glenbower Wood & Lake CLG purchased it for restoration and community use. A volunteer committee now oversees management of this section and is excited to welcome in new members and helpers!
  • There are 39 different species of moss in the woodland.
  • We have Sequoiadendron giganteum trees (that’s a giant Redwood to you and me) in our wood. These are native to California and one specimen is the largest tree in Glenbower Wood.
  • The now drained lake was used to power the corn mill located behind the ‘Old Thatch’ pub.
  • There is a holy well and mass rock located north of the Metal Bridge.

If you have some great photos of the woods (new or old) you can share them with us at glenbowerwood@gmail.com.
